Domestic workers perform a variety of household services for an individual, from providing cleaning and household maintenance, or cooking, laundry and ironing, or care for children and elderly dependents, and other household errands. Domestic workers are those workers who perform work in or for a private household or households. They provide direct and indirect care services, and as such are key members of the care economy. “DOMESTIC WORKER” OR “KASAMBAHAY” refers to any person engaged in domestic work within an employment relationship, whether on a live-in or live-out arrangement, such as, but not limited to, general house help, nursemaid or “yaya”, cook, gardener, or laundry person, but shall exclude family drivers. A domestic helper, also known as a maid, works in homes to provide cleaning services. Domestic helpers are responsible for cleaning areas of the home indicated by homeowners, and in a manner that has been requested. A helper can offer constant care that family members cannot. In the case of a single-income household with one family member who is able to stay home most of the time, a helper can offer some relief as well as physical assistance where two are needed.

Domestic workers are those workers who perform work in or for a private household or households. They provide direct and indirect care services, and as such are key members of the care economy. Their work may include tasks such as cleaning the house, cooking, washing and ironing clothes, taking care of children, or elderly or sick members of a family, gardening, guarding the house, driving for the family, and even taking care of household pets. A domestic worker may work on full-time or part-time basis; may be employed by a single household or through or by a service provider; may be residing in the household of the employer (live-in worker) or may be living in his or her own residence (live-out). A domestic worker may be working in a country of which she/he is not a national, thus referred to as a migrant domestic worker.

Although they provide essential services, domestic workers rarely have access to rights and protection. Around 81 per cent are in informal employment – that’s twice the share of informal employment among other employees. They also face some of the most strenuous working conditions. They earn 56 per cent of average monthly wages of other employees, and are more likely than other workers to work either very long or very short hours They are also vulnerable to violence and harassment, and restrictions on freedom of movement. Informal domestic workers are particularly vulnerable. Informality in domestic work can partly be attributed to gaps in national labour and social security legislation, and partly to gaps in implementation. Of the 75.6 million domestic workers worldwide, 76.2 per cent are women, meaning that a quarter of domestic workers are men. Domestic work is a more important source of employment though among female employees than among male employees. The 2021 minimum wage, assuming 160 hours worked in a month, equated to R3,054 for domestic workers at R19. 09 an hour. In 2022, this will increase to R3,710 at R23. 19 an hour – an increase of 21.5%
